Make sure everything is connected to the MAP sensor as it should be. My Cherokee will run perfectly, but when I unplug the vacuum line to the sensor it is exactly as you've described. Plug it back in and smooth sailing.

Knowing the year of your XJ would help us to help you but most of the older XJs the MAP sensor is located on the fire wall right behind the throttle body and there is a small vacuum line that runs from the TB to the MAP. while you are at it take a good close look at ALL of your vacuum lines....especially the ones running to your various engine sensors. A cracked or unplugged vacuum line most likely is your problem.

I know this is the most basic of things but is your Jeep getting a good supply of clean air. I.E. is the air intake not plugged and is your air filter clean. A strong smell of gasoline would indicate it's not getting enough air or there is a weak spark on the ignition side or there is a bad sensor telling the computer your engine needs more fuel when it doesn't. Hope this helps. Good luck.
