Default Brake nightmare

I swapped different upgraded axles (no abs) onto my 1991 Cherokee Laredo that had the abs system. Now my brake pedal requires excessive force to get the jeep to stop. How do I fix this??

Try pulling the fuse relay for the ABS. See if that helps. ABS is only good for snow driving anyways

I've tried that, I'm thinking I have to replace the abs parts with non abs parts. These parts include the booster and master cylinder. I've seen lots of chatter about this but never paid any attention to the possible upgrades, stupid I know!

What parts from what jeep do I need??

well if your gonna do that, just get yourself a WJ brake booster, a non ABS cherokee proportioning valve and re-plum the lines. while your at it, rip that ABS module out of there, and pull the bulb out of the dash so it doesnt annoy you

I dont know that the abs is really the issue, I have abs with an 8 1/4 and dont have any problems other than it sounds weird when the back locks and the front pulses. If your new axle has bigger/disc brakes they require more fluid and pressure to work properly, you may just need a bigger master cylinder. Im not a brake expert or anything but theres my $.02

This might be a dumb question, but did you bleed the brakes?

Did you check the wheel cylinders to make sure there not gummed up or frozen?

Matt, I think a good start would be to disconnect that ABS module that is by the Master Cylinder and sling it in the weeds. See how the brakes feel after that. If they are still sketchy, either get the Master Cylinder out of your old Jeep and put it in the 91 or acquire a non-ABS Master Cylinder for a 91 and put that in. The only thing good about the whole ABS system that they put in the XJ is that it gets you bigger knuckle U-joints in your front D30...That's it!!

Almost forgot. A good bit of advice for junkyard shopping. 91-95 XJs are all identical. anything older or newer and you have to make sure the parts will fit.

if you go the wj upgrade route, you need a master cylinder and booster from any 1999-2004 wj. not sure if the prop valve is different for abs versions of the cherokee but if it is just take the one out of a non abs cherokee 91-95.

the swap is pretty simple, if you have any questions let me know, ive done it.

does your 8.8 have discs? if so you will need a prop valve out of a grand with rear discs. I dont see why a wj prop valve wouldnt work. disc brakes require more fluid to engage them properly, and the xj prop valve doesnt let that amount of fluid get to the rear.

if its drum brakes just use an xj prop valve and good to go.
