So i have a 96' Cherokee sport and i have lock problems, go figure. Anywho my driver door is my favorite cause it works for me. but the other three only unlock and lock when the feel like it. My hatch is fine so no problems there. The locks will usually lock when the button is pushed but they wont unlock all the way. so what is a person to do. I bet someone knows a solution. Thanks for all the help... that i will soon get... i hope...

search it there some thing that fixs the problem in the main switchon drivers door

One more here with a 99..
The remote and inside controls work for the hatch always, and the back doors usually, but never really for the front doors..
does yours still make the popping noise like they are trying to unlock? (mine does)

 

I only have problems with the passenger side not unlocking, but yes, it does sound like it is 'trying' to unlock.

 

master door (window) switch... mine has a short and wont lock, but will unlock, all the doors... also none of the passengers window switches work, just my door only... oh weel for now... new ones are like 100+ and i havent found a good JY one yet...

 

Door locks are Very simple, it is like on or off, if it isn't unlocking fully there is something stopping its path or it doesn't have enough greese. Or a bad actuator. If you have power or the switch makes the door lock attempt to work your wiring is fine for the most part.

 

I have a '98 Cherokee with none working doors. This write up helped me out. Costs me 12 bucks in the end and about an hour of work. I needed to grind down the rods a lil for the actuator attachment to fit onto, but other than that it was clear sailing

96 Classic with same problem. They lock fine but are a pain in the *** to unlock. Sometimes I can't even unlock them manually. The hatch is the only one that locks and unlocks like it should.

 

My wife's 92 Laredo is the same way, its a hit and miss with the buttons. Sometimes you can hold the unlock button and it will eventually unlock all the doors, other times it might unlock one or two of them. My 87... well I dont even have a key. Just toggles and a start button, so I dont even bother with the doors.

 

Wow, same problem. And so far only one post for a solution of adding another actuator. I'll keep checking back. I've always just sprayed some WD, it works for a bit. Then they start acting up a gain. I guess one of these days I'll get in there and try cleaning them out. I bet mine are packed with alot of dirt because of the WD.

 

My 92 Limited XJ is having the same issue.
The drivers door has never unlocked for me with the key fob.. wait, I lied. It unlocks once in a blue moon. And the lock button on the door itself is hard as hell to push with my broken thumb.

The passenger door has never given me an issue. The rear doors were always great until a drunk friend decided to kick it open from the inside rather than use the handle. Annnd now the rear drivers door isn't unlocking.

When it's -30 and my hands are full, I really count on my key fob. =( I broke a nail this morning trying to open my back door... *cries

 

The worst part is that the back doors don't have key spots, so I have to reach back in through the front door... and being that I'm short w/short arms, it's a pain in the ***. Especially if I'm carrying things.

The back hatch hasn't given me any locking issues, however the support beams don't seem to want to stay on anymore, and never hold it up fully.

I'm considering buying a new(er) Jeep.

 

Our 98 has a similar problem. The locks all seem to lock/unlock intermitently, but never a problem with the hatch. However, when ours don't work they don't make a nice solid thud, they make a whining noise that's clearly heard outside the Jeep. I've broken the actuators down as far as I can without cutting, cleaned and lubed, and no luck. Just not worth paying $400 for 4 new ones. Keep wondering how hard it would be to retrofit <96 actuators, since they're much cheaper.
