I'm having an issue with my xj, most of the time when I start it turns on fine, but randomly if I use it then turn it off and try to turn it on again to won't crank over, it's almost as if I'm trying to turn it on, on drive ( if that makes and sense). I have to leave it there for a bit and attempt try it again, I already changed the crank postion sensor, I've heard it could be the nss, if some body give me some advice on what it could it will be appreciated.

I agree w Spyder if it starts when its cold and then after driving a while and gets warmed up the starter could be going bad ... had this happen before and it drove me crazy after stranding wifey a couple times I took advice from old mechanic friend and changed starter and that fixed the beast

I have similar issues. At times the vehicle will start first time in the morning, ill drive a block to my moms and will fail to start. However it will start in neutral.
Other times its the exact same scenario, but it won't start in P or N. I gotta bang on the starter to get it to crank over. It rarely happens but does sometimes.

Reason is I had a starting problem - took my starter off and it tested fine. Turned out the mating surface between the starter and the engine block was covered in grease, so it wasn't making good electrical grounding contact to the engine block. Cleaned and sanded the surfaces down real well and bolted it back up. Started right up and faster than ever.
X2 on nss. Having same problem with my xj. Sometimes I jiggle my shifter or shift it to netural and it will start fine. I got another nss and im going to rebuild my old one just hsvent had time to fix winter in oh is brutal this year 10 to below zero
