XJ transmission reputation question?
I am a fairly new XJ owner and i'm having an issue with a GM mechanic that I know. Like I said, he is a GM mechanic, and he is claiming that the "chrysler" jeeps are known for having bad transmissions. He says get a "ford" jeep. From what i've been reading I don't agree that the transmissions are known to have issues. Can you please help to settle this?

The AW4 overall is a very strong transmission. You are both kind of right in that debate. Chrysler does have trouble with thier transmission, thankfully enough our AW4 is a toyota made transmission. I have had several Rams that have had tranny issues. If you properly maintain your AW4 it will last you a lifetime. I bought my XJ in 02 with 15K on it, now it has 178,522 on it. Routine filter/fluid change and you'll be great. Hope that helps. Welcome to the XJ owner family

My '92 has the AW4 and is pushing 250K miles on it. I purchased it from the original owner who only added gas and changed the oil every 2 years I thinking. I changed all the fluids when I got it and the transmission still shifts smooth. Never let me down. Now the A604 in my Grand Caravan in another story..
Chrysler!!!!
The AW4 is a good tranny. (Aisin of Japan and Warner Gear from the US).
Just keep to the fluid/filter change as stated in the owners manual and you will be golden for a long time.
