In general, how good/reasonable is the ground clearance for a stock XJ? (2001 60th Anniversary) Is the ground clearance a common hindrance on stock models that are used off road? If anyone has the measurements, that would help.

hmmmm, well I know if you're going to do any serious off-rodaing you deff want to beef it up....

I think I had 16 before I lifted mine, but I don't really remember. With a 3 inch lift, my only clearance issues are with the front and rear axles. Stock height, I wouldn't really off road it too much, you can loose 3 inches in the mud fast.

my ground clearence is half way up the back of the honda that stops for no reason in front off me lol

A stock Cherokee can be used on mild trails, that said you have to really watch your approach, departure, and break over angles. With good traction tires I have seen stock height Cherokees run Black Diamond trails at Virtue Flats OHV area.Originally Posted by RichM

I agree with Lurk520, ground clearance is measured from the ground to the LOWEST point on your vehicle, which would be either the front or rear diff, and the ONLY way to raise it is with taller tires, just my .02

ground clearance = lowest point of the front/rear diffs to the ground. On a stock XJ with 215/75's it's 7.3". If it's on 225/75's, then add .5". The only way to increase this is to get taller tires.
When i first got my 99 I had 235's on it and ran some mild to slightly challenging trails and never had a clearance issue. No matter how much clearance you have though, armor is a great thing to invest in (diff covers, skids, rock rails, etc).

As long as you are careful, a stock xj will go a lot of places; i take lines in my stock xj my buddy won't touch in his toyota pickup . Definitely get some armor and skids though.
