XJ Dimmer acuator replacement ?

XJ Dimmer acuator replacement ?
I was given a Cherokee Column the other day to install in my CJ5 and after looking at the column, it appears the dimmer actuator is missing, I'm going to order a new one but want to know how to install it ? Do I have to take the steering wheel off or can I install it through the side where the wiper dimmer switch are ??
