ive heard you can send the vin in to Jeep n they'll send you a list of everything about your Jeep, from the color to the gear ratios, or look in the owners manual if it came w it, 9/10 it should say sport, or country I do believe

When you buy a "new to you" XJ, are there parts that you automatically replace with new? I am trying to make sure that I get mine running well before I start trying to do anything lift/tire wise and all of that other fun stuff.

I have tried getting a hold of the PO to see if there was anything she could tell me about the vehicle, but I get no response. So rather than guess my through I thought I would ask this question and at least get some items out of the way before I start trying to fumble my way around in it.

I think finally solved my over heating issue with the new Shroud and fan clutch. Those were the last 2 components I had to replace on the cooling system.

I did notice when I took it up north that it really doesn't like long inclines, It slows way down. Is this common with these XJ's or do I possibly have an issue somewhere? So far I have replaced the radiator, rad hoses, therm, mechanical fan shroud, fan clutch, rad cap, new coolant, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor. Don't think I forgot anything, lol.

Does anyone have a guess as to why AutoZone sells a manual steering box when as I understand it all xj/MJs had powersteering. I figured out how to delete power steering pump so I wonder if this is a viable option

 

Contact Jeep here, give them your VIN, and ask for a build sheet. It will give you a list of every option your XJ had when it left the factory.

First about those inclines. I know when I pull the Allegheny Front which is about 5mi w/3 sections a 9% grade my '96,w/same drivetrain as yours,won't do it in OD. Sometimes I'll drop the shifter to 3 or when it down shifts itself I'll just work the throttle to keep it from up shifting. Plenty of power to pull it when not in OD though.
Other than what you've already done maintenance wise so far you may want to check/change the differentials and transfer case fluids depending on what they look like. Also you may want to have a trans flush done. I'm getting ready to have one done. They're not cheap ($100-$150) but I feel they're worth it. Grease or replace the steering components if needed. Of course there's the brake assembies. Air filter. Shocks and steering stabilizer? Serpentine belt. Might want to pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual. LOTS of stuff to get into if you feel like it.

Have you ever driven an XJ with non-functioning power steering?? NOT fun.

 

Yes I have. Lol. Mine was originally equipped with Emmanuel steering. (I call it that because it took both you and Emmanuel to turn the wheel! Lol) I later upgraded to an 87 power steering box. Stock sized tires to 235's the manual was ok but once you go larger, assisted/power is the way to go.

 

I have when i blew the output seals in my steering box. That was a fun trip out of the rocky trail and 3 hours home

I have some extra trans cooler line left over from that fix can I use that for the return line on my power steering, I already have a new pressure line to put on

 

So do they have a correct idler bracket to replace pump with? I drove a bigger truck everyday with no powersteering before my xj and mj. Ever car is different I understand but a long as hard steering is the problem i'm ok with no ps. The MJ is slowly headed towards street/strip territory
