I'm planning on replacing a 12" piece of rubber hose that connects to the bottom side of my transmission cooler, what's the best way to do it? Should I clamp it and remove it from one side install one end and quickly swap it? Do I need to bleed the air out in some special way or just top off the fluid? I've got a quart of ATF+4 to refill some.

No: The 4WD one has a small shaft splined for the married transfer case; the 2WD one has a very long shaft splined for the drive shaft slip yoke and a large extension tail housing. They require a rebuild to convert.

Not sure, never done it. They're just U joints.

Inside the vehicle or under the hood? There's another joint around the air cleaner. But if there's no play there's no play.

Is this something I should act on immediately (to avoid damaging components in the tranny) or is just something I should consider changing ( to get back to my smooth as silk shifting)
I'm not sure if it would damage it specifically, but in general shock loading is a very bad thing to be avoided. I would change the fluid to be the correct stuff.

Drain pan underneath, replace hose. The system will bleed itself out, run it in Neutral for a little while after the replacement, check the dipstick, top up as necessary.

ATF+4 is only for use in XJs with the 30RH/32RH Chrysler 3-speed automatics (or I guess an ancient TorqueFlite). AW4 requires Dexron III, Mercon, or JWS-3309 fluid.

Thanks again for your response.

I'm going to try to track down some of the brands you've recommended. (easier said than done)

Ohhhh I just noticed you're in the Dominican!

I mentioned Valvoline MaxLife because it's in all the Wal-Marts here. Find something that says "DEX/MERC" or "D/M" on it, it's basically what all of the older American makes use.

I keep forgetting to post V8 ZJ 44RE...whoops... The manual says only ATF+, and ATF+4 is backwards compatible? Any guestimate how much fluid I'll lose? Does the AUX cooler always circulate or does it only do so once up to temp? Thanks!

Ahhh - only use Chrysler ATF then! I'm sure +3 can be used in a pinch but ATF+4 is everywhere. If you run the Dex/Merc stuff you will kill the clutches.

No idea on ZJ plumbing. You may wish to ask in the Grand Cherokee section - this is for XJs. (XJ cooler has no thermostats)

I think I recall you telling me that your childhood nickname was "Dim Tim". Or is that what they call you now?
