Is there an estimation of how long the AW4 transmissions last?
I'm getting ready to bolt a 71,000 mile motor to a 243,000 mile transmission. I would swap the trans too but I can barely afford the motor swap.
Anything I can do to check the condition of the trans? I've never done any repairs or inspections on a transmission before.

Thanks. Is there any particular auxiliary cooler you recommend?
Judging by this DIY it does not look to be outside of my skill set.

Okay I'd like a second opinion here.
Twice today I've gone out to start the Jeep (-22, -35 with wind) and come back say 20 minutes later to see the thermostat above 210 and the electric fan winding away. No action from clutch fan. Once I get moving everything is fine. Yesterday was not as cold or windy, did not have this issue.
My thinking is that with how damn cold and windy it is, when stationary heat from the radiator is not warming up the main fan's clutch to a point where it moves significant air.
Sounds reasonable right? I don't have an IR thermometer or I'd just point it at the fan clutch and see what I get.
(And yes I did let my XJ warm up for twenty minutes. You try driving with a stiff clutch and shifter boot frozen sold lol)

Nope, it stays probably around the 200-205 mark (metric gauge so I'm doing in-head conversions), mind you I'm not staying parked at red lights for 10 minutes.
Yeah not that great on fuel economy lol

Doesn't the mechanical fan have a viscous clutch? I'd think extreme cold weather failure would cause it to operate at constant full speed, resulting in excess cooling.
Am I thinking about this the right way?

Almost. It is fluid-filled but it's not a viscous clutch like you're thinking of. It spins at max for like the first few seconds but after that there's a bi-metallic bit inside that has to heat up to engage the clutch more. If you've ever taken apart an old-style mercury thermostat it's the same idea.

In that case, what you said seems to make sense. It's obviously something I don't have personal experience with, though.

I see what you did there... no learning on the Internet!
Just hilarious to come out to a Jeep in -30 and hear no clutch fan but the e-fan whirring away. lmao

Changed out my old thermostat that was causing over heating issues. Now it doesn't get warm enough, no matter how long I drive or idle it won't get past the first white line on the gauge. I'm guessing its running around 130* or so.
This is with a motorad thermostat from rock auto, New clutch fan, new water pump, and a newer radiator.
I guess I should yank the thermostat and order another?
