Hello all! I am new to this forum and am looking for a Torque converter for my 1999 xj with AW4. My jeep has 250,000 miles and my front trans seal just blew. I have a spare transmission with 110000 miles on it, but I need a torque converter to match. I don't want to replace my trans and reuse my worn out converter. Does anybody have a low mileage converter they may part with for a decent price? Thank you for your time.

Not sure on an AW4, but other trans ~$200

Reminds me of a story;
My son's GM car developed a serious transmission leak at the torque convertor.
We took it to a transmission shop in town and got an estimate that was twice the value of the car.
Outside of the ridiculous shop rate, what made the estimate so expensive was the factory new torque convertor (with full mark up).

I asked about using a rebuilt TC and the reply was, "they never last".
Took the car back and installed a Rockauto rebuild and a seal kit.

The car lasted another 50,000 miles until it was totaled by a drunk.

 

The torque converter is a sealed unit and unless it's cracked it shouldn't leak or wear out, except for the lock-up clutch. The pump seal that the converter slides into only cost about $5.

 

Thank you all for the responses. I have a local supplier in town that sells remanufactured tc's for $180. I feel like my Tc clutches are weak and want to put in a lower mileage unit. I bought the jeep for $1300 so I am trying do do this job on a budget. That is why I would like to find a nice used one.

 

About a year ago I had the local transmission shop replace my 1996 xj torque converter (whining at idle, lack of power, etc.) I bought a RECON brand. I liked the 100,000 mile/ 4 year warranty. I bought a torque converter, new transmission oil pump, and seal kit for about $200-$250. If you are doing the work yourself, a used unit will be okay, but if you are paying for the labor, I would go for new/re manufactured. Afterwards, I found out the plant is located in Crossville, TN which is about 30 miles from home.

What makes you think that? If it's not locking up, or slipping in/out of lockup replacing the t/c is usually not the fix. Start by looking at the TPS sensor which wears out, adjusting the throttle-tranny cable (often improperly called a kickdown cable), and it still an issue then test the solenoid in the transmission.

 

Thank you for your information. I am replacing my transmission anyway and want to replace the 250,000 mile torque converter while I am at it. I was just looking to see if anybody on here has a low mileage converter that they would sell for a reasonable price.
