Wrong oil filter?
The one that the previous owner put I is smaller in diameter then the mopar one I just bought, does it matter? Even though the book says the one I just got is the right one?

No he means that if you buy a good filter then it's a cheap insurance for your engine. The old filter you had in there was probably junk and didn't work as well. I hear a lot of people on here say that mopar filters are really good. I don't know I use Fram and they seem to hold up

When you replace your filter use Mopar, Wix or Nappa Gold. Stay away from Fram. They are one of the worse filter to use especially on our Jeeps! When you use Fram you will have Dry starts and can cause damage to your engine.

The quality of a filter has nothing to do with its size. Doesn't mean that a larger filter isn't a good idea for a given situation. At least two sizes of Wix filters will fit on an unmodified '93 4.0 and I use the larger one.
To be blunt about it Fram filters are junk. There is another thread working right now with a video about filter quality. I don't mean to be harsh but what evidence do you use to tell how well a Fram holds up?
I started this before RTorrez posted and will send it along anyway.

I have been looking at several oil filter comparisons and this one is pretty good. Of note is that Microguard and Fram use cardboard endcaps for the filter material while most others use steel end caps(exception on the Fram Xtended guard with steel endcaps). Lately I have not heard good reviews on Fram though I used to use them quite often in the past and the Motorcraft FL1A I used back in highschool on my F100 looks pretty weak now. I usually spring for the K&N for my F150, but looking at that page I may try to switch to the Amsoil one, it looks to be better made and filter better. Pretty amazing how much of the 30micron contaminate some let pass.
Note that the Shell filter doesn't even have an anti-drainback valve in it.

I would not pay much attention to a study done by a backyard chemist. He has different rates and scores on filters that are the same thing. multiple filters are made by the same companies, but all score different? Not buying it.
Pick a good filter and be happy. Wix, Baldwin and purolator are all good makers. choose one of them or choose any dealer filters. ie; Mopar or Motorcraft. they are high quality and the vehicle manufacture trust them for use.

Now that I've stumbled across theses filter threads, I am wondering about the Fram filters I've been using. No issues yet that I can tell but when I went to purchase oil and a filter for my upcoming service, the store no longer stocked FRAM and seemed to have gone with Purolator and Bosch. Of course they were out of the Purolator size so I went with Bosch as I know their general quality from my VW hobby. Anyone else run Bosch? All I know is that after reading about FRAM filters here, I will no longer be doing the old "FRAM it and slam it."

Fram is on the lower scale of quality oil filters.
