I remember on my 89 Cherokee 4.0, 170kmi the engine seemed to have some sort of knock which increased with rpm. It sounded like a wrist pin knock. It still ran great so I just used a quart of lucas and 20w-50 oil to try and quiet it down slightly.

Now that I just got my 95 4.0 w 105kmi, the engine sounded buttery smooth. I changed the oil this morning, used 5 qts of castrol 10w-30 and a quart of lucas. I swear today, after the oil change, I can hear a slight knock just like in the 89 4.0 but not near as bad!

How do you make it stop!! lol drives me crazy

oh...also realized I am leaking oil...not engine oil I don't think as it is super dirty..underside of the m/t trans is also oily..where could that leak be from?

Might be a rear seal leaking. 4.0L engines are prone to piston slap. Maybe that's what you are hearing. Try some slightly heavier oil just to see if it by chance goes away. Then you will know if it is slap or wrist pin knock.

If you only put 5 quarts in your your 1 quart low 4.0L hold 6 quarts on oil change...

He used 5qts Castrol plus 1 qt of Lucas for a total of 6 qts. Math try it you might like it. Ha Ha!
