It is how tall the tire is that requires regearing, not the width. It is highly recommended to regear for 33s, but is not an absolute requirement. I am running 33s with my stock gears and have been for over 2 years. You will probably want to regear over time as a personal choice. If the cost of regearing scares you, as it did me, then check your local jy for a set of XJ axles with factory 4.10 gears. It took me about a year to find my set but I have front and rear in the garage waiting to be swapped in.

I pulled the rear axle out of a 95 4 cyl 2wd and the front out of 86 V6 4wd. Look for mid 80s V6 or any 4 cyl 4wd automatic. It will not be easy but worth it in the end. Where are you located? I know of a another 86 V6 4wd at at jy in Memhis, TN.

I paid a little over $300 for both axles and spent about 4 hours of labor to pull them.

For your 99, I would swap your front axles shafts in to the older housing and you would need to swap out the parking brake cables. Otherwise direct bolt in. The front shaft swap because the 86 would have the 2 piece pass side shaft with vac disco. It would require changing out the seals, but you would have the stronger u-joints on your 99 model shafts.

Any XJ of any year that has the 2.5 4 banger will have 4.10 gears in the axles.

absolutely, ABSOLUTELY NOT true.

2.5 liter cherokee up to 91 with a 5 speed = 3.73 or 4.10 gears. (with 4.10's being more common than 3.73's)
2.5 liter up to 91 with auto = 4.10's or 4.56
2.5 liter 4 speed = 3.55 or 3.73 (3.55's more common than 3.73).

that is the ONLY guarantee....that it is not guaranteed, but there are guidelines.

91 and up should follow the same rules. but, I've had a 94 and a 93 xj 4 cylinder 5 speed now and both turned out to have 3.55's unfortunately. so that is up in the air.

anyone who tells you it's 4.10's set in stone is just plain wrong.

anyways...as for tires. go with the 10.50's if you don't intend to trim the absolute **** out of your jeep to fit them (yeah, your'e gonna have to anyways since 32's are "the largest" tire you can go with 4.5" without trimming is 32x11.50.

I wouldn't suggest 12.50's to anyone with an xj...12.50's are designed with a larger, heavier vehicle in mind. the 12.50 will give you more "float" action because the xj is not as heavy as a fullsize, and so it won't dig down as easy.

Wow.....now that I have all the buckshot picked out of my face, I guess I can say I stand thoroughly corrected.

lol. I'm sorry man....nothing meant against you. you probably picked up that info from someone who "knows" what their talkinb about. I've stripped enough xj's/mj's to know what gears come with what, and know enough people who've also done so to make that "chart".

the only thing everyone needs to remember is that, it's Jeep. nothing was ever set in stone option-wise with them (at least on the cherokees and comanches)
