Worth fixing?
I've got a '99 Cherokee with 315,000 miles. It's been a GREAT vehicle - hardly any repairs other than normal belts and such. Now it has several leaks and I'm deciding whether it's worth getting it fixed or just dumping it and getting a different vehicle. According to what the mechanic found, there's a leak in the rear main seal as well as a leak in the transfer case inside the transmission (which means they have to completely drop the transmission to work on it). Costs are expected to be around $750, and they won't guarantee any of the work because of the number of miles on the vehicle. I also need to replace battery cables and a get a new alternator, but my biggest concern is if fixing the leaks will be worth it. I work about 60 miles from home (all interstate driving) and intend on using this vehicle for the wintertime if I do get it fixed. I'm hoping someone has a high-mileage Jeep that can help me make this decision. Thanks!

If it has been that good of a vehicle and that is the worst repair it needs then yes I believe it would be worth it. An that really doesnt sound to bad of a price for the work. Could you do it yourself? save some $$$?

Consider a remanufctured engine which will have a warranty and a JY tranny(needs to be a 4WD tranny) and get another 250,000 out of it before you need to do this again. If we are driving cars then! We may be getting beamed from point to point by that time.

YOu dont have to drop the tranny for a rear main seal only the oil pan. Not a hard job either. All you need is a basic tool set to do it.
How bad is the t-case leak. Not a hard swap either. Just some Idea's Do you have any mechanical back ground.
Just curious the jobs may seem hard but in fact they are easy. Why the XJ is so Popular now they are simple to work on.
