is it worth it???
Hi All,
I have a 96 cheerokee classic that i bought new. It has 145k miles on it. A few weeks ago the radiator went and i replaced it, today i just found out that the motor is shot. It will be about 1700 for a new one. That is way less than i would spend on getting another car. My question is, if i get a new motor is should i be able to get another 50 or 100k out of the car? If that is the case, i would get the new motor and wait on getting a car.
Any thoughts?
Thanks much,
David

You are just fine with the Jeep if you don't mind what is wrong with the Jeep's motor. Did you throw a rod. Just curious. Pick up a JY motor for like 300 bucks alot of JY's will give you a 90 day warrenty on it.
But a properly maintained Jeep will run forever. Another reason why we love them so much. Both mine got 180,000 on them and still running strong.

Oh yeah 1700 is a bit much considering there is a 96 right down the road for me and he only wants 1600 for it. May consider getting another Jeep if you were to pay that much.

As others have said it may pay to get a J/Y motor. I put a remanufactured motor in mine in 2005 and did it because I plan to get another 200,000 miles out of mine. It had that on the old motor and could have been rebuilt for about $1,000 but I didn't have time or a substitute for the Jeep at the time. Bought the motor and when it arrived I put it in over the weekend and was only down a couple of days. In my opinion if you want to keep the Jeep a few years(8-10) then go with the new motor but if you are trying to get by for a year or two put in the J/Y motor.

What i dont understand is, is getting a new motor sort of like getting a new car - except that it still looks old? If that is the case it would be worth it to me.

They are like putting a new heart in your chest. The heart is new but you have multiple body systems. You still have the same kidneys, liver, pancreas and etc...
So putting in the new motor still leaves the cooling system and brakes and differentials etc... So It is not quite a new Cherokee but that doesn't mean it won't last for many more years. Mine is 20 years old and I hope to get another 20 out of her or until we have nuclear cars or electric which make our infernal combustion stuff illegal to operate.

I am curious this new motor for $1700 does that include installation?
IMHO it's a 96 and you are the original owner I'd definitely replace it and you should easily get a couple hundred thousand miles out of it..I bought my new rebuilt motor shipped for around $900 and installed it myself over a weekend..Granted I did run into a few hiccups and learned a few lessons but well worth it in the end..Lord knows I a no not afraid to tackle just about any wrenching task..

If you like your jeep and its in good shape. I would buy a remanufactured engine. Jasper are very good that will want you old one for a core. contact them for a local installer that sells the jasper engine and have him install it with a warrenty. after thinking about it i think i am giong to go for the new motor - i am pretty clueless about them though - should it be another jeep straight 6 type? or does anyone have any recomendations? i cant really install the motor myself cause i dont know how and dont live in a house with a driveway or anything so i have to rely on my mechanic to get a motor and install.
Thanks!

I have seen people transplant V8 in there Jeeps will take modding and there for more money plus you will more than likely have to get another tranny and what not. Stick with the I-6, If you want more power start looking for a stroker. 4.6L I-6
