Hey guys, pretty new on here but I've been trolling around on here for a while, trying to figure out exactly what parts are on the XJ I recently purchased. I thought I had identified my rear axle as the Chrysler 8.25. I looked at this reference chart
then looked at my axle.
But last night I ran my VIN and it says I have ABS. Which should mean I have a Dana35. I have an abs light on my dash that has never come on. I have slid down a few muddy hills where my abs should have activated but didn't.
Obviously, I don't care about having ABS, I just want an 8.25. I don't plan on a ton of crazy off reading but I really don't want that turd axle under my truck. Can you guys identify please?
Thanks.

Reason: Misspell
The "ABS tumors" (LOL) look like this thing to the right of the master cylinder:
Even if you don't have it, that doesn't mean that your Jeep never did. Some people delete the ABS system altogether and swap in brake lines from a non-ABS XJ. If you pull the ABS fuse, it won't light up on the dash any more. If your build sheet says you had ABS, you probably did, and someone deleted it.
ABS on this truck wasn't all that great. You're not really missing out on anything.

Plus they are conveniently located to block access when changing the front left shock.
Every Dana cover that I have seen has DANA stamped into the front of the cover with some other numbers stamped into it as well. The other difference that I have noticed is that the DANA cover sits flush on the housing at the outer edges while the 8.25 actually has a small lip that goes all the way around the housing sticking past the edge just a little.
If that photo is an 8.25 then I'm not sure again what I have ... I had pretty well just accepted that it was a D35.
The telltale difference is the differential itself. When you look at the cover of an 8.25, the flat part of the differential sticks out a little underneath it, so that it looks like you could sit just the pumpkin on the ground and not have it roll. The D35 is rounded on the bottom instead. The pics of all the covers don't show you that flat part; you have to see the whole thing to see that difference.
Yup, that's an 8.25
Leaky plug and all. It's amazing how even JY's don't get this right. When I shopped for a later model 29 spline I had many JY's try and sell me a DANA. Had to point out clues above as well. Laughed when I pointed out the DANA stamped on the cover to one guy.
I'm guessing if the spec sheet says you have ABS, the 8.25 isn't original to the Jeep, and someone swapped it in. I have (had) ABS and now have an 8.25. No dash light either, just pulled the relay for it. Anyway, glad you have the 8.25! Now pull a shaft and count if it's 27 or 29 spline! Lol
