Best thing, slow down and adjust for driving conditions.

Actually, FWD/traction is safer. With FWD, the rear end simply follows the front end. With RWD, the rear end constantly wants to pass the front end (swap ends), not a good thing. However, a traction enhanced diff on the steering axle causes steering irregularites.

Best scenario......... slow down AND have some form of a traction enhanced diff.

I have a spartan lunchbox locker in the rear of my jeep and it great going to straight lines in the snow, but can be very scary going around turns. The locker keeps the momentum forward and my front end slides rather than the rear end drifting. With that said though I wouldn't give up my rear locker ever, it is more beneficial than not all around

A locked front will just push forward into a turn (understeer)
I have a welded rear and its honestly easier to drive in snow and ice than on pavement, open diffs are easy but they suck. The only time I encounter the rear trying to pass the front (oversteer) is when I'm trying to slide it, and its more predictable than my old limited slip since it doesn't disengage/engage.
A rear locker would be fine, but don't weld a diff on a DD, it sucks on pavement.
