ok fellow cherokee owners i have a bit of news for all of ya i have done several things to fix my jeep and havent been on in awhile due to the jeep i also have a 1990 cherokee like you and most others and was my daily driver up untill 2 months ago so i spent alot of money for tools and testers and like you everything was reading right even swap a ecm in cuz i couldn't get any codes from it turned out everything was fine and working (now several hundred dollars later and a mad wife)the problem lays in a defect in the fuel tank (remove you fuel pump the rubber hose the conects the fuel pump it self to the outlet to the fuel filter is a rubber hose it will be soft and brittle and likely have a hole in it )i stumbled on to this when i got done swapping out sensors and relay (all of them) now how did i discover this i used a fuel pressure gauge and drove it with out a hood and tape the guage to the window and it worked flawless UNTILL i got below a half of tank then the fuel pump stated getting loud and when it did that the fuel pressure went from 28 psi to 12 psi and would slowly drop down to 8 then the engine would surge and all my problem got worse so i filled it up and it improved (not much ) but was drivable so i went and got the whole assembley for the fuel pump and replace it and only after that did i know that was the problem i drove it and the symptoms were gone (symptoms)stumbling when taking offsluggish backfiring like it was outa time stallinghard startingkicking bucking like a broncoand prbly a fe i am missing all because of a hose that was leaking fuel back in the tank and not making enough pressure
I dont think my jeep has those kinds of problems, the only problem I really have while driving it is my gear shift gettin stuck in neutral and I have to put it in reverse to get it goin again. I've also been having a problem with my battery not being charged enough, to where if I'm driving for a little while and have the air on (the air that doesnt even blow through my vents or give out cold air, but thats not really a mystery I need solved lol) my alternator gauge will drop down to just before the second lowest notch (right above the notch that has the danger zone) and if I have to stop for a minute and restart it it sounds like the battery is almost dead. Again though, thats not really a huge mystery as thats probably just a problem with the alternator. I will tell my mechanic to consider the possiblity of a hole in the fuel pump hose though, so thanks for your input. Did you have to start your jeep with starter fluid too jeepxtrails?
I took my jeep in to my mechanic yesterday. So far the A/C is fixed in my truck. From what I understand its blowing through the vents and the cold air works now. Not sure if he fixed the problem of keeping the battery charged, but I'm at $305 right now. He still couldnt get it not to start but he thinks its the sensors and he said he could replace it for 100 more but he doesnt like to guess and that would be guessing so it might not work. I told him to go ahead and keep it another day, leave it out in the heat, and try to start it in the morning. HOPEFULLY the damn thing wont start so he can trace the problem and know for sure. Everyone pray that my truck doesnt start tomorrow!
Ok, he STILL couldn't get it not to start all day today, so I went ahead and spent another $100 and had him put in a new crank sensor. He said 9 times outta 10 its the crank sensor, so thats his best guess right now. He told me if it doesnt fix the problem then he'll put the old one back in and put the $100 towards fixing whatever the real problem is =) I really hope its fixed, I'll keep all of you updated since I'm sure everyone's totally on the edge of their seats waiting for updates on the status of my jeep lol.
Well, it looks like the new crank sensor did the trick. No more having to start my jeep with starter fluid all the damn time! But guess what. Now theres some kind of problem with my starter. the other day I tried starting my jeep up (I had just been driving it and went in the store for 5 minutes to get money from the ATM) and it wouldnt start. No cranking, no turning over, no clicking, nothing but a hum when I turn the key. My dads had that happen to him before so he got under my jeep and tapped on the starter solenoid with a hammer, and it started right up. Happened again this morning. I'm gonna take it back out to the mechanic tomorrow and have him take a look at it. I'm thinking this might be my problem that I've been having with it staying charged. When I couldnt start it the other day I thought the battery may be dead so to test it I hooked jumper cables to the battery and then tried to make a spark with the other end to see if it was dead or not. My battery was very much alive, and my jeep still sounds like the batteries almost dead whenever I go to start it, so I'm thinking it has to do with the starter somehow. Any thoughts?

I think my starting issue is fuel, i replaced all the ignition stuff, distributor, coil, spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires....etc but im think it's fuel now, someone said if you turn the key on and off twice to prime the fuel pump it might start...it has been working for me so far. Knock on wood! I haven't replaced the fuel pump yet so we shall see..

to all jeep owners having trouble with engine stalling and not starting, buy can of carburetor gumout cleaner, remove air filter cover and hose from air intake. it seems like the butterfly is not moving freely. spray carburetor cleaner inside and around mouth to loosen all gummy buildup, wipe clean in and out. restart engine and spray more inside while engine running. this solved my problem and it only cost me 5.50 good luck
Yeah I got my jeep to the mechanic just in time because my starter was pretty much dead lol. He replaced it and now it runs great! Starts right up every time, sounds good, air works, everything is awesome. I think the only thing I really have left to do to it is to get new tires eventually, but thats not a priority at all because they're fine right now, kinda worn but no cracks and no belts showing. Thanks for the feedback guys, I kinda figured everything out on my own anyways but at least I was able to help other people out there who might have the same problem. I searched everywhere and never found and clues as to what it could be, so now others like me will know what to do =)
