alrighty guys,

I came home the other day and parked my jeep, everything was running fine with no problems. Went out about 2 hours later and it wouldn't start. The starter will crank, gauges seem correct, no dummy lights. I get fuel pressure and the pump seems fine. I pulled a plug and grounded it and i couldn't get a spark. Here's where it gets weird. Within the past oh, 5000-6000 miles ive replaced my plugs, plug wires, cap&rotor, and put in an accel epoxy filled coil. The fuel pump has been replaced fairly recently, along with the fuel filter. I checked all of the fuses and everything seemed fine. I swapped a bunch of relays and still nothing. Another thread said to check the cps by unplugging it and re-pluging it back in to re-set the connection with the ecm. still nothing. Oh, and I've re-built my neutral safety switch recently also, so that can be taken off the list...
At this point I am little lost and would really appreciate some input. its a 92' Cherokee with the original 4.0l.

Those Accel coils have a very poor track record of longevity.

If this were my vehicle, I'd start by testing your ignition coil.

Normally I'd say the crankshaft position sensor is the #1 suspect and it still is high on the list, but I'm not a big fan of the Accel coils and as a dead coil will show with testing of primary and secondary resistances, I'd start there for this particular situation.

 

yeah, I bought it because I didnt want to replace it with a stock coil and i didnt have the money for an MSD... I'll get it tested. Thanks

 

I'm not sure how to test the CPS on non-Renix motors but your lack of spark, given all the parts that are fairly new, would lead me to believe it's your CPS. The NSS or starter would prevent it from cranking at all. I've heard that the Renix test for voltage works on newer CPSs but I've also heard that it doesn't. Hopefully someone else will chime in with suggestions but if it were my rig, the first place I would look is the CPS.

 

Ok guys, new update. put a new crank position sensor in and still nothing. didnt get a chance to test the coil, but i get power to the coil for about two seconds and then it stops.... does anyone know if a faulty camshaft position sensor could do the same thing? thanks

 

Doubt it. Test or try a different coil first. It really is suspect and you must rule it in or out early in the no-start process. It only takes a few minutes to test it with a meter and a manual.

 

like i said before, i only get power to the coil for about two seconds, then it stops... so it has to be something else before the coil...

It would be a poor choice to ignore his advise.

 

im not trying to ignore his advice. im simply stating that i do not get power to my coil. if it still wont fire once i get power to my coil that's a whole different story.

 

ONE month later.... i did lots of stuff too. it ran again after i re-seated the connectors UNDER the coil, whazzat?the ignition control monitor or whatever.

it ran for about a month or two. it wouldn't start for about six months before i fixed it by doing that. now the other day it decided not to start again.

i tried my trick as has worked in the past and no go. so i bought a new one for about a hun. no go again! amazed. just reseatted again and again and nothing. then i removed the maf, i think it is and it was covered with oil. (deal by the intake tube). it starts right up!! i'm like Yea!!! runs two f'in days, now ITS DEAD AGAIN! i connected a ground to coil, did nada. sprayed the maf again, squat. looked for call out codes but there are none cause the check engine like obviously never worked, that i can remember.

so now off to the store once i figure out the bulb size, but in the meantime i would really like to re-seat the connector on the ecm. would somebody PLEASE tell me wtf it is located? thx.....The Hijacker

sorry, i thought this thread was about starting a jeep that would crank but not start. the op's not objecting so why are you? there's already nine hundred posts on "my jeep wont start", didn't think we needed nine hundred and one.

 

It becomes confusing quickly when people are chiming on on two separate issues. It's called "hijacking".

You will get more accurate replies if you start your own thread. It is to your advantage to do so. I agree with the moderator.

 

Did the original poster ever get his issue fixed? I didn't see a recent update was just curious
