I have a 96 cherokee 4.0.. Won't start in Park intermitatly..Turn key with left hand, jiggle the trans lever with right hand, back and forth from park to neutral. If I'm lucky it'll start. only happens once in awhile..The Dealer can't fix it, cause it ain't broke when they have it. Also the 4 wheel light on the dash says "Part Time" When it isn't even in 4 wheel drive..Any help would be appreciated..

try your neutral saftey switch. that is possibly the problem.

 

yea try taking off the nss and cleaning it its real easy just search for how to clean it theres a few write ups on it

 

Or just bypass the thing as far as the starter motor ground

 

yea mine does the same thing. i never bothered to fix it cause i kno its just the nss i think its also linked to my backup lights not workin. i personally just start mine in neutral if i have any trouble

ya or just dont fix it and for the light ya in my 87 it is on all the time i think that is bc it will be in 4wd for like hours on end even days so i think it just stuck and now my 92 is doing it also idk about my 88 bc i have not wheeled in it but i think it will. it might even be the transfer case bc bothmy 87 and my 92 have the np231 and the 88 has the np242
