Default Won't start

I got the battery wired right - still wouldn't start, so I scanned it with an OBDII scanner and got a code - P1694 - "Bus fail." I searched online and found it might be a failed CPS. I replaced it with a CPS from a '92 Cherokee and scanned it again. Cleared the error and scanned again - no codes returned.

It still won't start, even with starting fluid.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm not sure of this without referencing actual part numbers, but did you verify that the crank sensor for the 1990 is the same as for the 1992?

It very possibly is not the right crank sensor you have installed, even though it might fit and the connector might attach.

87-90 Xjs have a lot of parts that are just for those years. 91+ takes a lot of different part numbers. If so, gotta get the right crank sensor in there and see if that resolves it.

Other possibilities for this code (once you verify crank sensor) includes the TCM/PCM; there should be a testing flowchart out there if you search.

CCKen will likely reply, as he is always sniffing around for cookies the reward for being the one to solve a problem here......

About the crank sensor, all I can say is it looks the same except for the plug connector, which I changed, and scanning after installing it didn't produce any OBDII codes. I'm now thinking about an electronic transponder ignition key. I'd like to know how to get one that will work, or know how to disable that function.

Quick check shows the sensors to be different. Get onto a parts store site and look at the application data if you wish. You should never have to change connectors for a sensor.

Gotta get the right sensor in there or your engine management system will never work properly and your vehicle likely will not even start. That is job #1.
