I bought a 93 xj without an engine, I purchased a running engine out of a 95 xj and installed. It turns over and is getting fuel, but no spark. Is there a way to test the ecm or cps to make sure they are good?

Sure you need an ohm/voltmeter and you need to test the sensors to make sure you get 5 or more volts on 2 of the 3 wires and the 1 with not voltage for I think less the 5 ohms or resistance or something along those lines.. Also you need to check that you are getting spark from the cap to the coil, if not replace it...I had a similar issue on a new motor and ended up being a combo of the CPS, Coil and Cam pisition sensor/pickup coil.. Now this motor was it just the block and head or everything attached? Reason is there are differences in the electronics and such on a 93 and 95 even though the blocks and heads I do believe are the same casting.

I replaced the entire engine. it was pulled out running and dropped in hooked everything up and nothing. I changed ecms today and still nothing. I am leaning towards the cps. my volt meter broke, so I am going to try the cps from my other jeep which I know is good. thanks for the info.

You need to get a replacement meter ASAP that is the cheapest tool and the most useful in the toolbox. After you replace the CPS let us know what you find and we will point you in the right direction assuming you still need some help.

One thing you might also consider is the CPS is probably from the old setup ie a 93 and you may need one for a 95 for it to work properly..I'd try the CPS for a 95 but that's just me..Also for future parts some parts you will need for a 95 since some of your engine parts are from a 95 and some are from a 93..So it could get confusing..

I think he is Ok the range from 91-96 are the same and 97-01 are the same for CPS anyway. I may be wrong on the later years but I have owned a 92 & a 96 besides my 90.
I recall exchanging some parts between those two pretty frequently trying to get the 96 running when I first got it.

I picked up a CPS at autozone a few weeks ago, installed it and ended up not being my problem, so I cleaned it up a little, and returned it with no issue. It was only ~$50, so it's worth just buying it and giving it a shot, if that doesn't fix it, move on to the next potential issue.

Check all the fuses in the PDC under the hood. I chased my no spark issue for hours(and missed a wheeling trip) until I checked the fuses and found that "Engine Control Fuse 1" was blown... kind of crucial to running eh? Haven't had a problem since.

That was the first thing I checked was the fuses, I even checked all the fuses under the dash. The only thing left is the cps. I hope thats the prob. thanks for everybodies help. Once I get it running, I have to fix the wipers and powers windows. I checked all fuses and nothing. is there any relays that control the windows or wipers. Rear wiper works. I have tried all 4 doors and nothing, I am guessing I have lost power all together. This project might be more trouble than it's worth. But I guess I can't complain for 200 bucks.

No in the end when you fix things it's rewarding..When I put a new motor in my 91 I had starting issues as well and it sucked..I replaced a load of sensors and such and in the end it turned out my distributor wasn't indexed properly...So the firing order was complete off...now that's another possibility ...did the new motor have the distributor, cap, rotor wires and plugs all in and you didn't have to mess with em or remove em?

The new engine had all the dist, plugs wires coil already attached. I worked on it tonight, I finaly got it to fire. It was the most simplest thing you could think of. The contact under the cap for the coil, was rubbing on the rotor conact. I bent the rotor contact down a little to give it some clearance, and it fired right up. It always seems to be the little things that get overlooked.
