Default new xj project

I just started my new xj project and Iam not sure how extreme to go. I have a 93 xj with a 4.5 inch lift and 32s, locked rear, flowmaster exhaust, and custom bumpers. Well I am trying to use it as my daily. at 3.80 per gallon and 10 mpg fuel economy. it is not working out. So I am trading it for another 93 that I put a motor in and am trying to get running. Not sure how high to lift and what tires to put on and still be streetable and somewhat economical. I was thinking about a 2 or 3 in and some 30x 9.50 all terians. not too big, but still can have a little fun. Along with the 93 I got a complete 89 xj( I say complete, the drivetrain needs put back together) So if anybody needs any parts for an xj let me know. Ex. axles/ trans, t-case, body parts, interior. What do you guys think would be the best streetable/ offroad package?

Well what rear axle do you currently have on the new XJ? If its a d35 I would start by replacing it.

I have a 99 with the 4l with a 3.5" and 32" Swampers and it's not too bad. Chrysler 8.25 with 3.55 gears in the rear and its really not that bad.

8.25 is a good rear. If you had a D35 and were planning some serious wheelin' you would want to get a new one but you are good with an 8.25

Question would a 8.25 be a worth while drop in replacement for a D35? I might be able to get my hands on a 8.25 out of a early 90's model xj...

If you want to make it a worth while swap, get one from a 97-01 XJ as they are 29 spline. The one out of the early 90's model will be a 27 spline and isn't really worth the swap.

Would it be worth the effort or would I be better off holding off and finding and 8.8 and have a shop do the needed mods for it to bolt up to the springs and shocks..?

I guess it depends on the amount of cash you are looking to spend or can spend. Another alternative is getting a Dana 44 out of the rear of a late 80's XJ.

I am going to be heading to some salvage yards soon so I will keep an eye out..if I can't find a good D44 I might just get a later model 8.25...

I am not sure of the ratio, but I do have a 8.25 if need be. I am trying to sell it, If it doesn't sell I will probaly install it. Also have the dana 30 front to match.

To bad you aren't closer to me..What gears are in them? I think I can find a newer 8.25 locally for a couple hundred bucks with gears to match mine and eventually I can just regear to 4.10's and be all good...

Yeah too bad, I am sure that this rear end is probaly 3.55 or 3.73, but good news, I got my new xj running tonight. I was getting pretty frustrated. I tried everything, coil, cps, ecm, you name it I replaced it. Last resort, I tooked the cap off for the 20th time and looked everything over again and I noticed that the contact for the coil on the cap, looked like it had been rubbing on the rotor, I bent the rotor contact down, reassembled and it fired right up. Man I felt like a real dumb@!!

DOh it's always the small things..Been there..I spent 2 days getting mine to fire up after putting a reman motor in and I almost lit the damn thing on fire..lol It's amazing what being a couple teeth off on the distrib will do.. I just keep telling myself I needed that cps, pickup coil, ignition coil and so forth..I even burned out a starter in the process..lol
