Auto Zone can test the starter for you.

I was working to get the alternator off and got to the bottom bolt and am not able to move it. Any suggestions would be welcomed and I have used WD-40.

Does the motor turn over? Like does the starter come on when you turn key? Or just a click and silence? Or sound like a buzzer going off?( Numerous clicks )

Well i will agree with the other guys, Sounds like a bad battery. Try hooking up another RUNNING vehicle to your battery with jumper cables. If it does the same thing, Look for a bad connection between starter and battery..

Also try hitting the starter with a hammer or something solid while someone else tries too crank it. It works But is a sign of a near dead starter.

I had a almost new starter that acted this way, turns out it was bad out of the box.

If you cant get too a parts store too have battery tested, swap one from another vehicle if can just too rule the battery out.

I thought that they should be able to test the alternator while it's still in the vehicle. I once bought a starter from Autozone for my old Ranger, and the teeth on the gears weren't defined enough. Put it in and it just spun without engaging the flywheel. I was furious and they tried to tell me it was OK. Got my money back and went to Advance Auto and got one and it worked great.

If the starter just clicks, sounds like a bad starter solenoid...probably best to replace the whole thing. It might still be under warranty.

Update. My battery was checked out fine. I've shifted the shifter and shook it and nothing happened. I hit the starter with my wrench and didn't get any response. When I put the battery back in I got a small crank but then nothing.

Almost sure your starter is bad. Have you tried hitting it with something solid while someone else tried cranking it at the same time?

It's been my experience that when there is a 'click' and no-start, the click is from one of two things: either the starter relay clicks and sends voltage to the solenoid which means (in theory) that the starter is getting voltage and is bad; or the click is the starter hitting the flywheel but the battery doesn't have enough amperage to turn the starter, which means your starter is bad. Considering that your battery load test passed, I would assume starter and go from there. The KISS method recommends that you first crawl up under the Jeep and read voltage on the starter while a buddy or wife turns and holds the key in the crank position. If there's voltage, then it's more than likely the battery. I just spent 2 hours metering everything on my 92 related to the cranking system (ignition out, relay in/out, checked continuity on the relay, and finally starter) and should have metered the starter first. Good luck!

Hey guys. Thanks for all the help. It was the starter. Replaced it and works great. One question. If the belt squeaks should I loosen or tighten the belt tightener bolt?

Probably loosen it. Mine was squeaking a little after I put it back together one day and I loosened it just a little and it went away.
