Crank Postion Sensor? Yes it does. And yes they are a common problem on all XJ's. Test it when you get the chance, its located on the transmission bell housing on the drivers side.

If you have spark, the problem is not likely to be the crank sensor.

The question to answer now is what is the "quality" of the spark. Very important to the starting equation. Take a plug out, keep it attached to the plug wire, place the plug electrode near a good engine ground, have a buddy crank the engine while you watch.

You are looking for a strong, blue, snapping spark. Yellow/orange/white indicates a weak spark which may not be strong enough to start the engine, in which case testing of your ignition coil for primary/secondary resistances would be recommended.

And if spark is strong and blue, try this quick and dirty test. Spray a small amount of starting fluid into the intake. If the engine starts and runs momentarily, you have confirmed that you have a FUEL DELIVERY problem.

Let us know what you find!
