how about coils in front leafs in rear?
simple, no converting needed, stable and flexy.
there is a point where having too much flex can hurt you, tires getting caught in undercuts and whatnot.
im a fan of a linked front suspension due to better approach angles, and i like the leaves in the rear for the simplicity of it, no need to mess with a setup that already works great

I really don't do a whole lot of off roading but I want to turn my XJ into a toy eventually and do a lot more off roading. For now I am just going to leave it the way it is but want to change it at some time. Should I just leave it and not worry about it or eventually change it?

I still think that coils all the way around can be much more stable but I'm pretty sure it's just not worth it!
