I have read about this and it can be very dangerous, I would not recommend. Also check out some of my prior thread, I posted some pics
I have used that method on every one I've done. Never a Cherokee but its all the same. I work alone so I have no one else to worry about getting hit by a flying tool if it goes wrong.
I didn't need to use the starter. One smack with my palm and it came loose. Took about 45 mind to install with the correct Chrysler tools. Left the radiator and bumper on. Tick is still there but the new pulley runs nice and true. One problem down... lots to go.
