Default Wiring short? in dash and speakers

l just bought a 97 cherokee SE. The radio doesn't work (not a big issue since I planned on replacing it), but lights up when the dashlights are on. Whenever I let up on the brakes, use the windshield wipers, or when the key is turned in the ignition there is a popping noise from the speakers. I haven't checked all the fuses, but am sure some are blown. I believe there's a short causing this, but would like some guidance on where to start looking for it.

Thanks for any help
