Which fuse slot did you use? Which year XJ do you have? I will not run through the fuse box without a relay, but since I am running with a relay, I'm just looking for a power source for my switch.

Thanks,

OK ALL, I get the impression that some of us are still wondering exactly HOW the lights are wired. Here is a photo diagram that is comparable to how I wired my lights:

With this existing wiring, I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to tweak this wiring to only provide power to the switch when the vehicle is keyed to ACC and RUN. I need your help because I don't know enough about wiring and don't trust myself.

Looking at the above diagram, you'll see a wire running from the switch to the fusebox. My wiring is set up this way and is presently receiving power all the time (with ignition off or on). Is there a different circuit, either in the fuse box or elsewhere that I can tap into that will safely allow me to run lights only when the ignition is keyed on and running?

Thanks,
s

For those of you who have correctly understood my above posts in this thread, I have considered your comments and do appreciate them.

That's how I have mine... if you have a test light just probe wires by the fuse block... find one that is switched with ignition and "T" splice into it... Being that it's just to trigger the relay there will be only a minimal draw on whatever circuit you choose...

when i wire in my bumpre lights i wouldnt wire the m into the igntion switch!!! reason being when you turn ur car on, the lights would be drawing power and ive tried to start my car while having 600 watts of lights trying to be turned on while the ignition of the engine... didnt happen! killed my battery. just by starting ur engine it takes the alternator 30 minutes to rebuild the engine to full power. there fore use the fuse box and its much simpler!!!!!!!

600watts of lights....REALLY?! thats either 6 100W Bulbs or 11 55w bulbs plus a little extra. I have two 55w lights wired up straight to the battery plus my headlights and such. I can start the Jeep with my brights and both 55w bulbs on with no problems.

you wire from the ignition which will already be fused at 40+amp fuse or battery to a fuse then to a switch

problem with jumping it off the fuse box what ever fuse you go to lets say the radio for examble its most likly a 10-15amp fuse now whats going to happend when you add 600watts of lights the fuse is probably going to blow so your probably going to put another in blow that also then you might deside to jump the fuse up to lets say a 20-25amp or maybe higher to actually make it not blow the fuse now what you have done is put a rediculessly high amp fuse on what ever else is on the rest of that line so what happends if one of those objects deside maybe they have a short like say that cool nifty radio you just installed with electrical tape
hmmm well your high amp fuse is probably not going to blow for a little while, while that wiring to your radio or whatever else has a short is quickly burning the outside casing of the wire down your dashboard i think you can probably get whats going to happen or hey maybe you will get lucky nothing will happen maybe just fry your ecm
ive been doing auto electrical for 5years and am certified and ive seen many of junk *** wiring jobs that should of burn the car down and seen a quite a few that need a grand+ in damages
happy wiring dont for get to fuse

What it comes down to, is don't jump it straight off of any existing circuit, be it fuse box, ignition, or otherwise. Use a relay. I am including a simple diagram of relay wiring for reference. When doing this, you don't risk overloading any existing wiring.

hello all , is there anyone here that can possably tell me just where on earth the wires for FOG lights are ? i have the switch , and the light on the switch comes on but due to no names on the relays only numbers , and the manual does not list ???
and no location of where the wires run , i have a 1995 jeep cherokee limited xj with a seperate box on for the fuses , and no the relay position is NOT under bonnet . i did find a relay box located under dash , and for the likes of it all the person before has gone nuts with tape ... and had wired spot lights in some sort of strange manner that was making the lights short , i have since sorted , but would like to use the fog switch for a further two lights , i really dont want to start going mad with a drill and adding holes and switches ,
if i knew the location of the relay , and the connecter for the fog lamps i would be able to do .
anyone know where these lay in the wiring ?
