hi all im still having problems with my fans i have come to the understanding that the fan clutch is bad so i pulled one from a junk yard jeep its better but not near as good as the one in my dads jeep (much more roar)i was playing around with the old one and drilled two of the fan mounting holes out through the clutch and out the other side this will cause the fan to be fully engaged all of the time has anyone done this before will it work ??? i havent tried it yet wanted some feedback first i dont see why it wont work.what is the point in the clutch is it purely for noise reduction and fuel econemy as i cant see it makeing much difference in fuel

 

itll effect fuel im just not sure how much but if you are a baller like that then it wont matter lol, the only thing i can see going wrong with the setup is that the weight even tho its so small of a weight from the bolt might cause the bearing to crap out, kinda like an unbalanced tire

 

i was assuming the weight to be balanced with having bolts each side same weight plus the loss of the clutch fluid/oil but i have that concern too might just give it a go worst case i have to replace a bearing right lol

 

yeah it aint too bad i dont that one before.

 

I found out that if you have the clutch with the metal coil on front of it (like the one pictured here) and you take the coil off and turn it 1 turn counter clockwise it will give you better cooling and the "Roar" of wind when you give it gas. I think it makes the clutch a little tighter so anyone else out there try this yet? So far it worked on 2 jeeps that I tried it on...Tj

Just buy a fan spacer for about $20.00 at the local autoparts store and save the weight of the clutch.
A side benefit is with the clutch body out of the way you might improve air flow a tad.

 

im in the uk these things are harder to come buy do you have a link to any websites that might show one

 

www.summitracing.com is what you want. Flex-a-lite part #14548 is the one I think you want but measure your clutch thickness and pilot hole to be sure. Good Luck, RB

P.S. You have great machine shops over there that probably could machine one for you in a jiffy.

 

FYI I bought a brand new 14 inch flex fan and 2 1/4 inch spacer and my jeep kept overheating until I put the clutch fan back on and did that trick I mentioned, so NEVER switch to a flex fan IMHO...Tj

What I see is the bolts are sticking way too far away from the face of the clutch. You may not be able to mount your revised fan without the bolts sticking through the radiator fins. When I replace my clutch fan with a heavy duty one (only $2.00 more) there was only .25 to .38 inch between the clutch and fins. Scraped a few fins and knuckles bolting everything back together.

 

i have since cut the bolts down and fitted it yes it was tight and i swore alot but it seems to be ok but i think i will have a spacer made to lose the clutch wieght

 

Use your OEM 7 blade fan. It pulls more air than any aftermarket fan available. The fan spacer kit will come with longer bolts that will go thru your fan, the spacer and into the hub on the engine.
