i am thinking about going up to 36" tires my rig has dana 30 front and 8.25 rear i just rock crawl and stay out of the mud so i don't build a lot of rpms if i can't crawl it i don't climb it. will the axles hold up to such big tires. would lowering the gears help

They'd be closer to the limits than I like but if you carry spare shafts for safety you'd probably be fine.

Lowering the gears would hurt I think actually... because this would run your Rpms higher causing more torque on the axles... but that's beyond the point... rehearing helps in everything else... will they hold up? Depends on how u drive... most people will say no because of what they have read on forums from true all out rock crawlers... if you more or less trail ride then you will probly be fine... if you do break something upgrade to chromos at that point... I think you'll be fine though...

+1

If you bounce over everything then you'd for sure be breaking shafts, but if you crawl as you say you'll be fine as huntingman said.

You should go to 29 spline shafts, Randy's has some 1541H 29s for 70.62 each. With those you should have no problems with 36s if you use your brain when wheeling. The front D30 should be fine for the front if it isn't locked. If it is locked I would go with a set of Alloy shafts.

going to a steeper gear like 4:10s would be good you won't have any torque with the stock 3:55s going to like a 4:88+ may cause issues..i had 36s on a yj 30/35 locked rear 5 speed 4:10s and they held up well

I agree completely but if you upgrade to 29 spine shafts make sure that you get the one with the big U-joints, then upgrade the u-joints to the 760 series joint.

I would not even think about a locker with 36's. IMOP. With this set up the weak link is the ring & pinion. You will defiantly lose teeth on the weak ring gear. This is my buddy's problem and he's on 35's. He will bump it up the rocks though.

dana 30s are only good to a 35 after that you will bend the ears on your axle and make your camber really bad and wear your tires. my 30 has done it with 35.5 tsls and what did it to mine was up crawling and falling off a big ledge but my inner axles have held up fine for 3 years

well I dont like the idea but i'm runnin 35's on a stock d30 and d35. but i got a d44 front and a amc20 rear to put in now. I've not been nice to my axles at all and they didn't break yet, but its all in the situation your in for the amount of stress. so could work forever or ten min.
