Default Will exhaust leak cause poor gas milage?

So I have a persistent exhaust leak. I plan on going under and over the motor today sometime and tighten things up. But I have been thinking my gas mileage is horrible and wondering if this could be the cause. And if it could be, could a reason be proffered please? Thanks!!

The answer is yes. This topic comes up now and then. Some will vehemently deny it is possible. But what happens is that when the wave of exhaust goes past the leak, the part of the pulse that is pressurized will blow out, hence the noise. That is followed by a small time of vacuum due to the velocity of the exhaust gasses and that will suck air into the stream. The O2 sensor will read too much oxygen in the stream and compensate with a richer fuel/air mixture and that will reduce milage

Thankyou!! I had a suspicion that the o2 sensor would be a player in this.
