Will a 1992 2wd AX15 work in my 1998 4.0?
Hey all, My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Ax15 finally bit the dust and is stuck in a false nuetral, stick is right between reverse and fifth, but the stick wont budge. Ive found a 1992 Ax15 from a U-pull with only 113k. What I am worried about is the internal slave cylinder that 1992 uses verse my external on the 1998. Would I be okay if i took the 1998 bell housing off and put it on the 1992 transmission?

Pulled the shifter out of the jeep today, not really sure what I should be looking for. I can post pics of what I see to maybe get some ideas from you guys?
Thanks

Good info but I believe it's a bit worse than that. I took the shifter out, mine still has the little ring on the end of it on the shifter, and when trying to make it move with a screw driver it would not budge I have some pics that I'll post to help explain.
As you can see, that's where it's stuck and would not budge. I can push the two pins on each in just fine but I can not get the piece where the shifter ball goes in to move at all only a tiny, bit when using a ratchet on the bolt below.
Theres no magic fix its got to be convinced to shift keep fiddling with it dont be afraid to be a little ruff. Those shaft below are shift tubes they move back and forth while the socket where shifter sits moves side to side .
