Default Wierd problem!

Got this 98 Cherokee Sport the other day and driving home with it I can only get the rear speakers to work. No problem as the deck doesn't show the station or anything on the display and I have a new unit siting in my 91. Must be fubar'd right? So I go about fixing the hack and slash job someone has done to the wiring harness. I f'n hate when rookies do that. Went to jy and got the proper plugs and soldered them back up and bought the adapter anyone can get from walmart for 5 bucks and install my new unit. Geee so much simpler Einstein!
Welllllll no sound from door speakers. I took that dash apart looking for the cut or rip or something. Nada Zilch Nothing.
My hair is too short to grab and it's not like I can afford to pull any out anyway at my age.
Any Ideas? And yes I did check every fuse I could find.

Thanks!

from reading the begining portion im going to guess they worked previously try checking your door boot where the wires are going speaker wires cant hit ground or will cut out usally all 4speakers but some times 2 is there an amp any where that you see maybe factory? also if you have an old speaker lying around test at the deck and at the door with it the fronts perhaps might be blown? its pretty easy to run new wires in the door anyway make sure they are not hitting a ground also when you run the wire threw the gromet a long zip tie works good to get it threw or a coat hanger

Don't know if they worked. checked the door boot, if there is a factory amp it's well hidden.
Would like to narrow down the problem first.
Been my experience (1 van (I was driving!)and 1 car fire) that it's best to do everything possible to fix a problem first before resorting to bypassing factory wires. But I will if I have to.
Just the way everything looks so perfect ie. no rust and no tampering (Except the hack job at the radio plugs) that makes me feel I'm missing something else.
Did that with my 91. rebuilt the engine and found out after 3 days that the factory alarm system had to be rearmed after disconnecting the battery before it would start!

if your deck is not displaying information, your memory line isnt wired right. if your speakers are not piping out music, then the neg and pos lines for them are probably wired to your deck wrong.

i just had similar problems. when i got my xj the speakers were rotted. i wanted to put in my panasonic deck, but the jeep end was 87, and there is no diagram available for that model (people here and other sites claimed otherwise and tryed to help me, but there was no diagram matching my color code ever found).
i quicking wired in my deck and JVC speakers, i only had one functional speaker, and no memory (so now station, track info, anything on the deck screen, just a repeating welcome (demo mode)). i dealt with it because it was not my biggest concern.
took me forever to figure out the speakers, see newer harness, like the one coming off my panasonic deck, they group speakers together by color with a stripe indicating the negative, or positive, to differentiate in the color group. so for instance on my decks end its like this"
green = front driver side neg
green/white stripe = front driver side pos
white = rear driver side neg
white/black stripe = rear driver side pos

whereas on my old jeep end its different how it groups things with colors, its more like

white/black stripe = front driver side neg
green/white stripe = front driver side pos
white = rear driver side neg
green = rear driver side pos

see im used to wiring things by hand to some degree, and when i was winging it i wired color groups together thinking that they would follow the same general idea, but they dont positive and negatives coming off of the deck and wired into two negatives, and stuff like that, resulting in hang or less than my speakers working. i figured this out with trial and error and now have four functional speakers.

when it comes to memory then you need to wire it into one of the 12v lines. if you wire it in the wrong one you will know because it will always have power regardless of whether the vehicle is even on.

sorry if this is hard to understand, but i just dealt with these problems myself, so maybe i can help with any questions./

also if you dont even know where to begin with distinguishing speaker wires from the actual decks wiring then you can follow the wiring down with a flashlight into the dash and you should see it diverge into two parts.

ummmm sorry if it didn't come out the right way but I was laughing WITH you not at you.
Notice I said it was step 4. I did a lot of things first before even thinking Hmmmm I wonder if there is any speakers there.
I agree with you. check the simple shyt first. I didn't but I did get around to it.

Thanks New2jeeps42
That deck without the display is in the trash. this is all about the new one.
I went to the bone yard and found another 98 and got the two plugs and a lot of wire that plugged into the back of the stock stereo. the colours were an exact match to mine so I soldered and shrink taped the connections.
I then went to Walmart and bought an adapter. It plugs into the stock plugs and you then connect these wirres to the wires that go into your new stereo. these wires are colour coded the same. Seems the aftermarket got together and decided that White and Grey speaker wires will mean the front and purple and green will meant the rear speakers.
Now the original wiring harness is back to original and the adapter is done just the same way the stero shops do it.
Should just plug in and work right?
Well everything does.... almost. rear speakers, display, time, and memory when you turn it off. Even the power attenna.
Just no front speakers.
I checked ther doors found working speakers (tested them) and even took off the kick panels to follow the wires back into the cab. no problems.
I don't want to start taking the dash apart to trace the wires back to the deck. I believe somewhere they go to a plug or block or something because the wire colour is different in the doors than anything at the plug at the stereo back.
Anybody know where online I can get a wiring diagram?
Sorry no autozone up here in the great white north. Just Canadian tire which is the first or second level of h&ll I think.

give you a little hint and help simplify your head ache first go to your local hardware store ask them if they have a 4foot to 5foot ziptie most will have them just kinda hinden thats all they are fairly cheap cut the locking end off ziptie take the stereo out run it down the dash electrical tape some speaker wire to the end at the dash pull threw ziptie up with factory wires across the dash take off the end of the boot to the cab of the truck pull ziptie with wire attached threw go threw the boot into door hook to speaker easest and will save you lots of time if they sell the zipties in singles usally about $1.50 it works just like the snake for house wiring
