Default Why use ATF in transfer case?

Besides the obvious "because they said so" I was wondering why run ATF in the transfer case. Seems to me gear oil might be a better option. It is a gear box although the oil pump might not be able to handle the thicker oil.

gear oil is to thick and engineers engineer stuff a certain way and it is pretty much because they said so...and its such a simple set up in there there is no huge amount of lubrication needed just enough to cut friction down and keep stuff clean...

np231's an 234's have an little very small circulation pump to supply adequate lubrication to the chain an bearings ect. you will basically destroy your transfer case if you use engine oil an not ATF it has tight tolerances. just buy a good ATF fluid an be done with it.

Jeez....I sure hope I can tell the differance between a NP205 and a NP231! I say straight ATF+4(usually part or full synthetic) for low mileage, gudNtight tolerance transfer cases, and regular ATF + a couple ounces of Lucas Full Synthetic Oil Stabilizer mixed together for HIGH mileage looser tolerance Transfer Cases.
