A cherokee, XJ, will not have a V8. If you get the 4.0L 6 you can expect 150k to 250k miles out of it. Many people will tell you I'm crazy for say 150k, but I'm being conservative.
If you find a Grand Cherokee (you can keep that info I don't want it) then you may find one with a factory V8. I don't know much about the Grand's.

first off there are members here with 4.0 cherokees with well over 300k miles! That is another reason I chose the 4.0 4x4. The biggest reason though was my own experiences in 4.0 cherokees- they are tough little trucks!
These are great little trucks with a strong aftermarket, and being that there were about 100k of them made every year almost 2 decades there are TONS of used parts out there.
With the XJ you can come at it with a big wallet and make a top notch 4x4 out of it, or a guy on a budget can build one for next to nothing that is equally capable. I like the XJ because it is a timeless, classic design that all other SUVs have copied.

"Why should I buy a Cherokee?"
Plain and simple, if ya don't we will send Guido and Vito to your home and let them "persuade" you into buying one.
Thats total BS.
Thier names aren't Guido and Vito. But they WILL show up.

the v8 grand is tough as well, the 318 and 360 are time proven engines also. i prefer the xj, and the grand will have more little probs with all the luxuries it has, and the v8 trans is considered weak, but in my expereince the ones that go bad are never serviced and used for towing.
i agree, the question is not should i, but why shouldn't i.

I will assume you want a cherokee and not a grand cherokee. I just bought my first one about 2 months ago. I love it, though I've had to fix little things like replacing the motor, hahaha. No, really I did but it had a bad one when I bought it due to a faulty heater control valve which NEVER fails...just in my case. Small stuff like simple maintenance for a rig thats 20 years old needs that some people don't due so it adds up. I love mine though and there is now 4 total cherokees in my family ranging from 93-2000. NOT one time has one let us down. knock on wood. Cheap replacement parts. Loads of wrecked ones to steal parts off. Huge after market calling. Reliable. Very good rig for the money. Most people you talk to that have one will tell you they either love it or like it.
Of course you wont get too many people on this site to say they dont like them.....or we will
ish them!

You should buy an XJ Cherokee because it is compact enough to go anywhere a Wrangler can go but, roomy enough inside for 5 to ride comfortable and oh BTW that means warm and dry as well. No soft top here. The 4.0 I-6 motor is powerful, torquey, fuel efficient and bombproof. Mine has 240K and it's still going strong. They are quite capable in stock form but, the after market for this rig is HUGE!!!! Building them up is, also, very inexpensive if you can handle a wrench and you use your head. You can beat the **** out of an XJ all weekend and still depend on it to get you home and back and forth to work the whole nesxt week. You can do this week after week after week. I do!!! My XJ goes up, over or through anything I point it at off road. I can also load up the wife, 3 kids and a dog and all our luggage for a weekend down to grandma's house and get there on a little over half a tank of fuel. I get 300 miles to a tank of fuel. I used to get 400 before I installed a front locker....and that was lifted with 32" tires. In stock form with 235s I bet a guy could get close to 25 mpg on the highway. Feel free to ask me any particular detail type questions about the Jeep XJ. It is the best all around rig I have ever owned. The only thing I could ever see trading my XJ for would be a newer XJ. I may buy pickups and cars but I will always have a Jeep XJ.

400 miles to a tank????
i get 2 in the winter, with warm up time everywhere i go, and i just broke 20 mpg on the hiway, i've got 31" tires so the mileage is a little short, but fuel effecient they are not.
right now i get 13 city, in the summer i'm hoping for 15.

XJ's are awesome!
Strong like a pack mule, sure-footed as a mountain goat, economical to work on, easily modified to your personal taste, and aerodynamic as a brick!

I am a total newbie.. and infact this is goin to be my first car.. i thought of getting a cherokee because of its looks and i think it is a very strong suv..
so far out of the discussion on this thread I figured out that the cherokee is a real long lasting suv, but not very good on gas milage.. but now since the price of gas is not really too much, I dont think the gas milage really matters.
I have a question.. whats the difference between a jeep cherokee and a grand cherokee..
what is the averge miles per gallon that i can expect out of a 2001- 2002 model?
I plan on buying a 2001 or a 2002 with approximately 80000 miles on it. and I live in Mass.. what do u think is the best price for it.?

A grand Cherokee is an entirely seperate model. It is a bit larger and Jeep softened it up a bit for better overall sales. The XJ is in general a very simple and tough truck, with plenty of the Jeep spirit still alive in it. The Grand appeals to a broader audience because it makes a very good family SUV, with more space and more available options, but suffering IMO from a little too much Chrysler influence. In short it feels less like a Jeep, whereas the XJ won't have you forgetting it IS a JEEP anytime soon. Considering how many of us have an amazing love for these little XJs there must be something about these awesome little trucks to love! Trust me, once you buy an XJ and the XJ bug bites you, you are done for, you'll be driving one of these little bricks forever!
