I have a 90 XJ w/inline 6 and 5-speed manual trans. I'm new to everything and want to do right by my new "old" vehicle. Why can't I hardly find any performance parts specific to my year? I've found one cold air intake, one non-plastic valve cover, and no throttle spacers. If someone could give me advice, I'd appreciate it.

There were a handful out there.. but the last of the Renix Cherokees are now 18 years old.. they just aren't going to make anymore.... If you really want a Cold air kit, you can get an early HO one and modify it. Or get one of the generic intake tubes out there and make a heat shield for it.

Some one did make spacers at one time... but they didnt sell well, because they don't do much for an EFI engine.

Jacobs did make hi-energy ignition parts, but they might not still be available.

change your gears if you wanna drag race it. other than that, nah not much out there, headers exhaust systems things like that.

I guess I really don't know specifically what parts I need. I'm looking to get a little more "umph" out of my engine. I would like to accelerate a little quicker while maintaining decent gas mileage. I don't plan on being an exclusive off-roader. This is my daily driver.

Stroke it, maybe regear a little deeper (if you've an auto, you've got 3.55:1 gearing. It complements the OEM engine and transmission well, but 4.10's will give you some more grunt. Manuals came with 3.07:1 gearing - which is a mistake. Definitely go with 4.10 or better - depending on tyre size.)

A "basic stroker" can be done in an afternoon - you'll need to take the pistons out, and install them on the connecting rods from a 258ci engine. You'll also need the crankshaft and bearings - but no "overbore" is strictly necessary for a basic stroker. Assuming that there's no trouble with the cylinder bores, this makes it an afternoon job - a full day at worst - and you don't even need to pull the engine block to do it.

where have you been looking for these parts? ebay has dang near everything, renix engines also that I have seen

Engine internals are easy - he's probably talking about electronic mods.

Also, if he's in CA (I honestly didn't look,) he's boned on any external engine mod from OEM. They're stupid like that (nevermind that I can make the engine run cleaner and more efficient if I start scrapping parts - if the factory put it there, it stays there. Unless the State of California, in its terribly finite wisdom, has decided it's an "improvement.") Considering what it costs to get CARB approval, and the limited market in RENIX XJ/MJs, I can understand why it isn't done.)
