Question Why the MPG difference between the Sport and the Classic?

Everything I've read says the only difference is trim but look at KBB's MPG ratings:

http://www.kbb.com/jeep/cherokee/199...tion=excellent

I'm assuming it's the same motor but I have seen two different codings on VINS:

4.0L I6 MPI OHV
4.0L I6 FI

If these are essentially the same, the MPG difference must be the weight of the extras, no? (Especially since the Limited is also rated lower MPG.)

It would appear the better mileage would be on the Sport. Or maybe I'm reading it wrong and the 16/22 rating is for Manual trans...

Just looking for the best mileage...

Hoping someone could clarify.

FWIW: The way Jeep codes the VIN, it doesn't appear there is just a "Classic." The selections I've seen on VINs are: SPORT, SPORT/CLASSIC and SPT/CLASSIC/LTD.

And Carfax seems to be the only way to truely tell the difference.

Looks to me like they posted the maximum rating, which was with the manual.

No, its because the sport is the only one that came with the manual. And the manual always gets better mileage. I can attest to this b/c my 95 sport manual could get 22-24 mpg hwy (in stock trim) and my older 96 sport auto barely ever saw 20, more like 18 hwy. Both sports were almost identical too

Still can hit 20mpg once in a while

Thanks for the info.

So you're thinking it's more the way they have that graphic laid out? It is misleading.

I'm looking at 96-99 Sports. 18mpg isn't anything to write home about it but beats the **** out of my Silverado @ 13mpg.

Untrue, Mine had every option except leather, power seats and heated mirrors, if they had heated mirrors in 96.

My Renix gets 23 to 25MPG AX15, 3.07's 4wd.
Heck I towed a Nissan truck home on the car dolly and got 20mpg.
but I wasn't running 70mph either.
Now if I hook my 23' Catalina to it, all bets are off. That thing is like pulling a wall.
Its drops it to 12 to 13mpg.
