I had an '87 Montero with 263K that I used for years to get me into and out of the national forest in southern Illinois on hunting trips, but the little 4-banger just couldn't cut towing my heavy popup trailer.

I've told several friends that I thought the Jeep XJ is the best looking SUV ever and if my Mitsu died I'd get one. It did and I did. I doubled my horsepower in a lighter vehicle...more storage...better ride (on and off road)...I'd do a double back flip if I wasn't so old (63).

My 93 ZJ was totaled. I wanted another Jeep. Requirements were 4x4 and 4.0 Six. Looked at YJ, TJ, ZJ and XJ's. I got a 96 XJ because it was in the best condition of the 30-40 Rigs I looked at. Plusses are more space than the Wrangler and better off road than the Grand. Only Con so far is, not as comfortable as the grand, but much better than a wrangler.

bit of a masochist actually!

Easy to work on and the busted knuckles are better than the razor cuts working on that foreign crap.

Was looking for a good 4wd truck or suv. A friend of mine had a 98 Classic and he loved it and convinced me to get one. That was 2 years ago and I don't regret buying it one bit.

I bought mine because of price ($250) and i just couldnt pass up a 87 xj limited with the renix system.

When I was a teenager a friends father rolled his and bought it back from the insurance co.. It was only two years old when it happened with 70k on the meter. He wound up giving it to his son to do whatever he wanted to it. We eventually just made it a backwoods rig for his property upstate. Stock 89 limited impressed the crap at of me. I have had blazers and international scouts in my family growing up and the scout in stock form was close to matching the xj performance off road in stock form. The final thing that hooked me was the 4.0. we beat the living hell out of that rig though mud, Hydro locked it 4 times by jumping into the lake with it and a little wrenching, new fluids the thing kept purring right along. We finally broke its back when we used a backhoe to retrieve it out of a mud pit that was over the hood nose down. the only thing we could hook to was the rear axle and wound up tearing it from the body. This may be wrong but we wanted to see just how long the engine would run when we filled the valve cover with sand and mud. For three days straight we filled it with gas while it revving at 3/4 throttle and the girl kept going till we got tired of wasting good beer money on trying to blow up that motor. For three days that thing screamed and just kept telling us "Is this the best you can do???". Finally wound up pulling everything we could from that poor XJ and building another one that he wound up using as a daily driver for a few years till he bought a newer one. Funny thing is that we put that motor we tried to blow up into the new one after stripping it down and rebuilding it. There was 8 pounds of sand and mud mixed with oil in the bottom of the pan and we only replaced the bearings during the rebuild..Last I heard about that one was that it survived into the 300k mark and was retired as a farm vehicle which does the occational drive to town for supplies. Love the body style... Love the ease of maintenance... Love the durability. It also beat the 12 mpg of both my 72 K5 and my 77 k10. It was a crime the way we abused that poor xj but Ive been sold on it ever since and the one I have now is my third XJ.. And even this one got more then its share of abuse but still keeps going with 210k on the meter.

I have (was) been building CJs for over 20 years all for hard off road use. one day a kid stopped and asked if I was interested in a XJ with a 4 in lift. 4 bald swampers later it was home. threw a set of decent mudders on it and headed for the woods. WOW I in love. all CJs gone except first one and driveway is full of XJs. simple, dependable, and can lock my gear up,what not to love and give my CJ buddies fits on the trail!!!

I didn't get my first one until a month ago. I got rid of the 2500 & 3500 trucks when the horses and subsequent trailers went. The GMC 1500 was jacked up and expensive to work on, and keep fuel in.

The XJ is simple and inexpensive to work on, I get 50% better gas mileage, I can haul my camping gear inside the vehicle, and I like how comfortable the seat is...which is surprising considering it is a 15 yo Jeep, instead of a nice new leather bucket seat.

I had a 97 wrangler which wheeled like none other, but when the wife and I had our second child we realized the TJ was'nt practicle. We needed room for four and gear. Driving down the street one day I saw "Old red", a bright red 01 sport with about 20k and a brand new lift on her, I bought it without even driving it. Spent the next couple years trail running and wheelin it and loved the hell outta that Jeep. unfortunately aforementioned wife and I didn't work out and after the divorce I could'nt afford to keep paying for the XJ so I had to let her go. It took me five years but I finally got another one, this time a cherry 98. I love the square look, I hate the round everything off trend of newer vehicles. It goes over or up just about anything I point her at. It's good in the snow and easy to work on. Like a previous poster said, cleaned up she doubles as a respectable ride for a night on the town. I'm already thinking about buying another one so I can do the things that I can't to the DD.
Oh by the way, this thread really should be in chat, not a tech topic.
