Question Who makes the quietest Fuel Pump that lasts?? (91 XJ)

OK... Fuel Pump is out again.

I had replaced the OEM pump about 10 months ago with a Spectra 7072H from AutoZone. The Spectra was very loud and died within a few months. I replaced it with the same under AZ's limited warranty. Still friggin' loud and now that one is out. I'm done with Spectra... although I'm getting good at replacing fuel pumps.

I've done a forum search... and I'm only seeing folks complaining about how loud their pumps are vs. seeing anyone post about how "quiet" their new pump is. Is there such a thing? Or would I have to reverse the wheels of time in order to go back and buy an OEM from the dealer as a spare, when I first bought the ol' girl back in 1991?

Options:
  • Airtex? - Crap
  • Spectra? - Loud and goes bad within a year
  • Delphi? - Forum reports of being loud as well and not the best reviews
  • Denso?
  • Bosch? - Reviews say it's not a direct OEM fit. Some customization may be required.
  • Anything else?

Hit me up guys... what have you replaced your pump with that actually works and is relatively quiet? Also... if you have had a different experience for one of the ones I posted... please share.

Thanks guys!

Bob

I have used Delphi pump assemblies in 3 different XJs and probably over 100k miles. Never thought it was a loud pump and never had a problem with one.

I have used Bosch on a 1992 and 1988. The pump is just a cylinder. It definitely was available a few years back.

Did you replace the complete assembly or just the pump? Before you replace another pump post the values for volts and ohms on the 4? Wires to the pump. You'll want the volts while cranking and running, if possible.

Walbro is another option. Found this on Walbrofuelpumps.com. You just need to select the make, model, year, etc. Then hit the "Search" tab. Its not highligthed very well, but its directly underneath the dropdown boxes.

87-89 - part #5CA234
89-90 - part# 5CA234
91-93 - part #5CA234
94-96 - part #GCA707
97-00 - part #GCA733

I never bought one for a Jeep, but there they are if you want to try Walbro. For what its worth, the fuel pump in my Mustang is a BBK. Every BBK i have ever bought had Walbro stamped or printed on it. I got 15 years out of the last one.

I have a Walbro in my Evo and its crazy loud. At least twice as loud as the factory pump. Not sure if the other Walbro pumps are the same loudness though....

That whole loudness thing seems to be the common thread in a lot of the aftermarket fuel pumps...

Thanks for chiming in so far guys. I'd like to get her running by the end of the weekend and may end up with another AutoZone special just to get her going... but that's not my first choice.

I'm hoping against hope that someone comes on here and says: "XYZ pump is the best one... it runs quiet, has a great warranty, and mine has already lasted XX years so far!"

I know... I know... it's a long shot... but hey... Forums can provide wondrous things sometimes.

The only time i could hear my pumps run was priming, putting my ear to the gas cap and tank, or running the tank near dry (which can kill the pump). There was a Carter a couple years ago, and didnt sound right from day one. I could hear that one sitting in the backseat, with a full tank of gas. A year into it and the check valve failed. That was in the Mustang. Not sure whats in the XJ, but it runs quiet.

Just pick a name brand and run with it.

I just used the Bosch in an 1989. Modification to fit it was not to tough if you are somewhat mechanically minded. Runs great, no noise.
