Default White seal ring in dana 30?

Anyone know what this white ring is? Looks almost like a seal kindof but appears more like caulk applied by hand..

I'm in the middle of re-gearing and ended up pulling it off on one side because it looked damaged. Can't find any reference to it anywhere.

Either the pinion seal or the axle seal, no?

Writeup (I think?) Is found here:

No help here. It almost looks like some packaging "protection" that would be removed before installing. I don't recall ever seeing that, but it looks like both sides have a tab to get hold of to pull it off.

It is some kind of RTV. It can be white like my 2000 has, or it can be orange like in my 96. Sometimes gray. One of mine came out somehow when I did my seals. I just put it back in its place..lol .look at pics

Yup that's it, thanks Dumajones!

Now I wonder what it's for.. =/ Guess I shouldn't have pulled it off, I guess I could attempt to replace it with some fresh rtv =/

For clarification to others, it isn't the axle seal.

It's the excess rtv from when they pressed the tubes in to the housing at the factory. You can leave it or remove it without any issues as it is just the excess.

That is what I was thinking, cause the ring of RTV has a beginning and a end like it was applied from a big caulking gun

Ya it's not a seal its just the over fill from the tubes getting sealed.Ripped mine up when I did my seals so I just took all of it off and it's been fine,no leaks.
