'99 Jeep Cherokee XJ 5-spd manual; Where can I find a simple diagram of the drivetrain for the rig? Everything I've come across on-line seems to be parts diagrams -- not needed; I just want to see "this is this" and it is followed by "this" which is followed by "this" . . .

Thanks!

This isnt the drivetrain but it is an excellent picture detailing the front suspension. It helped me learn when coming from leaf spring 4x4 trucks all my life.

drive shafts run along length of jeep. axles run perpendicular. the tranny is connected to rear of engine, the transfer case is connected to the transmission. two drive shafts exit the transfer case, one to the front, one to the rear. these drive shafts enter the axle assembly at the differential. Each differential via gears sends the power from the drive shaft to the axles on respectively left and right side of its axle. the differential itself turns the direction of rotation 90 degrees, and has a gear ratio to reduce the axle speed verses the drive shaft speed. the differential also allows for wheel slip on right verses left side.

the transfer case selects either 2 wd or 4 wd operation, plus it can select a high or low gear ratio.

hope this helps
