Wheres the coolant goin ?
It's blown into the cylinder(s), where the coolant is being burned.
Yes, the 0331 head is infamous in Jeepdom. You won't have to search far on these forums to find us talking about it.
Unless your cousin is married to his Jeep, or is willing to sink a fair amount of money into it to fix it, he might be better off selling it.
While he still can.

FIRST MAKE SURE IT'S COMING FROM THE HEAD. Then if it is, remove the head and check for cracks. If there's no cracks visible, send it to a shop to be cleaned and checked and have the valve stem seals changed. Go buy a $70 gasket set and change it yourself... Done.
If it IS cracked, got to a junkyard and look for a good one, repeat above process..

It will still run but not to optimal performance. And if the heads cracked it can cause stalling, etc...

I was losing coolant, removed the head on my jeep, it was cracked, bought a jeep on CL for $200, took the head off that one and resold it for $350. Seriously doubt youll be that lucky but that's what I did. Also I didn't have it cleaned or checked or have the valve stem seals replaced. Which is stupid, but I was broke
And here you are wrong.

Most folks will have to pay to have this done. They have already taken it to a shop to have it looked at.
If the coolant has gotten into the oil, the bearings could be on their way out depending on the severity and time it has been mixing.
It makes absolutely no sense to put a known flawed 0331 head back on, remaned, junkyard find, whatever. Remanning will not fix the casting flaw.
Sometimes pouring $1,000 to $3,000 into a 13 year old vehicle is just not economically feasible or the best use of one's money.

This thread is by far the most comprehensive one online for educating yourself about the infamous 0331 cylinder head.
Required reading for anyone with a 2000 or 2001 XJ.
