Note there are two types of clock, and LCD, and Vacuum Fluorescent tyoes. My 1990 has LCD. One diagram shows both, the wire connections to the clock types are different. other diagram shows only one type, the LCD. My assumption is the LCD is the more modern type, but I maybe wrong. LCD has black numerals, a Vacuum Fluorescent will have glowing numerical.
What year is your jeep?
I assume it is near 1990 as the page you posted is same as in my 1990 manual. The dash was extensively redesigned late in the jeep production. I assume early dash designs will have same or simular to my 1990. The redesign of dash I think happened when the body was redesigned which Wikipedia says happened in Feb. 1997.
Page 8E7 the number two photo I posted shows Clock H and D terminals are for clock lighting, the LCD display needs light to see it well. check those for power.
upper right caption. Radio/clock illumination relay (not visible) So far left end of the dash, about mid height per the image You may have to lay on your back, head in the foot well with a bright light to find it. Use the wires colors shown on one of the prior wire diagrams to help you trace it also
I found this page by looking at page 8W-9 this is the Wiring and Components Index page. scroll down to the MJ/XJ section of that index page and you will find two figures for the instrument panel, figures 20 and 21
Page 8W-5 is the index for fuse panels diagrams
Page 8W-151 is the MJ/XJ wire routing and component ,location and Electrical Diagram Index
Pages 8W-1 thru 8W-4 give good general info, wire color codes, and component symbols to help you understand the schematics.
You're looking at the BACK side of the dash.
Everything left or right on a car is referred to as it you're in the driver's seat. Except if there is a diagram of a particular view like the one you're seeing.
Don't know if this is out of the 97_XJ_FSM, but check the connector index on page 1461. Learned this this morning while looking for Instrument Cluster connectors. Once you've found the connector in the index it should say something like 8W-80-? Where the ? is the section page below the index that contain it.
Honestly, I can't easily ready the clock in my '88 in the bright daylight unless I'm sitting under a tree or in a building shadow. I still have the factory radio with clock and can read that one easily. The dash clock illuminates at one level with the lights off, then dims a bit with lights on.
The pic makes the elements look brighter than they are in person. With the lights on, the time is barely visible but you can see the relative brightness between the 2 settings. Does yours dim even further with the lights on?
