If you can get an FSM get it. I have both Chiltons and Haynes and they both have their pro's and cons but glad I have both for reference.

I consider an FSM to be the first book purchased on any new vehicle. Then pickup additional books as interest/need warrents .

FSM is the best manual you can have for your XJ but, I have done some major surgerys with my good old Haynes Manual, available at most auto parts stores for around $20.

I have a Haynes and it works but its nothing special. For my BMW I picked up a Bentley manual thats 3 times as thick and gets down and detailed. I would rate Chilton a little lower than Haynes.

I would have to agree with you whole heartedly about Haynes being waaaaaaay better than Chiltons but, if you want the same detail as your Bentley Manual for your Beeemer, for your XJ.....Get the FSM Manual!!
