Remove the wheel/tire
Remove the brake drum
Remove the diff cover
Remove the cross shaft retainer and the cross shaft.
Push the axle in.
Remove the C-Clip
Pull the axleshaft out.

Are you talking about movement in and out when you pull on a wheel? A little is nowmal.. Your axels are secured by a C-clip, inside the differential. You pull the cover, remove the center pin and then pull the clip, slide axle the hub end.
