Default Wheel bearings

I purchased a 2001 xj in September. It was a one owner, but I have been going through it doing the general maintenance. New fluids stem to stern, new shocks, replaced a leaking radiator, the resistor in the heater motor and installing a radio that works. etc. 130k and runs pretty well.

I picked up some brake pads and was going to tackle the brakes next. I've noticed a bit of a hum in the front end. At first I thought alignment, but now I'm wondering about the front wheel bearings. I heard it isn't a tough job, but how do you check to see if they need replacement? It snowed the other day and the hum seems more pronounced when it is in part time 4 wheel drive.

Thanks

Jack up one side of your front end. Grab the tire at 6 and 12 o'clock. If there is any play pushing it back and forth your assembly is worn out.

Check for play by moving the yokes back and forth.
