iu have an 88 xj, so the speedometer is cable driven, and it bounces around +/- 5mph of where you are actually driving and it doesnt bother me all that much because i can still tell how fast im going, but i have a feeling that is whats causing my trip-odometer to say ive gone 2 miles when i haven't even gone 1. im almost sure its not the cable cause it moved fine when i had it all apart before to try to fix this, so im thinking its the speedo itself? idgaf about the mileage because me and the last 2 owners basically never had the speedo to begin with because they were too lazy to hook it up and when i did, i put the part that goes into the tcase in the wrong way (because i didnt know there was a right way until a few days ago) and today just went underneath and fixed it.

so basically im not sure if its the speedo, gear (which looked fine), a gear in the t-case, or last option would be the cable.
