Great thought, going through. Wonder if it'd work to install a seal in the front vacuum disco deal.
Yea Tony, I think your gonna just take the axle to a shop to have the bearing pressed. At least that's the deal for the earlier XJ's. A trick is to attach a chain to a lug then jerk it or let it snap with it's own weight if you don't get a puller.

Tony's got a '98 with 8.25 rear axle. The bearings are in the ends of the axle tubes, not pressed onto the axle shafts.
Do not use the 3-jaw, or 2-jaw puller attachment. there is a special tool made just for pulling these type of bearings. it threads onto the end of the slide hammer, and uses a pivoting block that you first push through the bearing, then you pivot it 90 degrees from the shaft and pull it tight against the back of the bearing. Then you tighten down the washer against the outer side of the bearing with the provided jam nut. Attach the slide hammer, then whack-away until the bearing comes out the end of the tube. It literally should only take about 15-20 seconds.

If there is the possibility that the bearings are still usable, and you wanted to remove them, inspect them, then re-install them. You would damage them with a jaw type puller to the point that they couldn't be reused.........but if you didnt care about reusing them, I suppose you could get them out with a jaw puller..........no way to lock the jaws onto the bearing, would probably have to reset your grip after every whack with the slide hammer.
